Joao Havelange, the former president of FIFA, has resigned from his position as honorary president amid an ethics committee investigation into a corruption case involving the organization’s former marketing partner, ISL. Havelange, who served as FIFA president from 1974 to 1998, faced allegations of receiving bribes amounting to tens of millions of dollars from ISL, which managed the allocation of television rights for the World Cup. Havelange resigned on April 18, and the ethics committee report stated that he would not be subject to legal action due to the absence of bribery as a crime under Swiss law during the relevant period. Havelange had previously resigned from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2011 due to bribery allegations.
