Jerome Boateng has weighed in on what he believes is holding FC Bayern Munich’s defence back that is clear leadership.
The former Bayern star, now at Austrian side LASK Linz, pointed to a lack of defined roles in the backline as a major concern.
Once seen as the heart of Bayern’s defence, Boateng knows what it takes to marshal a backline at the highest level. Speaking to Sport1, he offered honest thoughts about current centre-backs Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae.
“Of course I keep a close eye on them because they play for the club that is close to my heart,” said Boateng. “I know them both and watch the games.”
He didn’t hold back in his analysis of Bayern’s recurring issues at the back.
“In my opinion, there’s a bit of a lack of division of roles. Who is the boss? Who takes responsibility? I remember it from my time in Munich: If you make mistakes, you get harsh criticism.”
“There have simply been too many mistakes recently. In recent years, they haven’t been as successful as FC Bayern is known for.”
