Former England international Jermain Defoe has showered praise on Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, describing the Swedish forward as one of the most lethal strikers in the Premier League.
Speaking in an interview with Flashscore, the ex-Tottenham and Sunderland striker highlighted Isak’s impact and suggested he could be the missing piece for title-contending clubs such as Liverpool or Arsenal.
A game-changer for any club
Defoe, known for his own clinical finishing, believes Isak possesses qualities that make him stand out among the league’s top forwards.
Whoever gets him this summer, whether it’s Liverpool or Arsenal, talking about making the difference and getting over the line, it’s him,” Defoe stated.
The former striker’s remarks come amid growing speculation regarding Isak’s future, with reports linking him to some of England’s biggest clubs.
Despite Newcastle’s struggles this season, the 24-year-old forward has maintained a high level of performance, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most complete attackers in the league.
More than just a goal scorer
Defoe was particularly impressed with Isak’s all-around game, noting that his influence extends beyond just scoring goals.
He recalled Newcastle’s 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final, emphasizing the difficulties Isak created for two of the league’s best centre-backs, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães.
“And it’s not just the goals. Against Arsenal, the problems he caused Saliba and Gabriel, you just don’t see that—not even from Erling Haaland,” Defoe noted, suggesting that Isak’s skill set is unique, even when compared to Manchester City’s prolific Norwegian forward.
Strength, movement, and ruthlessness
One of Isak’s most defining traits, according to Defoe, is his deceptive strength.
Despite not appearing physically dominant, the Swedish striker knows how to use his body effectively against defenders.
He doesn’t look strong, but he is strong. He knows how to use his body,” Defoe explained.
Beyond his physical attributes, Isak’s movement and finishing ability make him a nightmare for defenders.
When he gets chances, he’s just ruthless,” Defoe continued. “He’s the one I enjoy watching.
Even years ago, against the best defenders like John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, and Jaap Stam, he would have caused them problems too.”
A striker who punishes every mistake
Concluding his assessment, Defoe underlined the fear that Isak instills in opposing defenders, likening his ability to capitalize on even the smallest errors to the very best in the game.
“Defenders know it’s going to be difficult against him. This guy is serious.
Give him half a chance, and he’ll punish you. The slightest mistake will be punished,” he warned.
With Newcastle battling to retain their star forward amid interest from top clubs, Isak’s performances will be crucial in determining both his future and the club’s ambitions moving forward.
