Jean-Marc Makusu Eyes Return to Belgian Top Flight with Zulte Waregem
Congolese international striker Jean-Marc Makusu is on the verge of a comeback to Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League, with the 22-year-old currently on trial at Zulte Waregem ahead of the new season.
Makusu, who previously had a challenging spell at Standard Liège, is seeking to revive his European career after failing to secure a lasting place at the Liège club. Signed in the final hours of the winter transfer window, the former top scorer of Kinshasa’s Entente Provinciale de Football with Bel’Or AC was unable to impress the management at Standard, leading to his release.
Instead of returning immediately to his home club in Kinshasa, Makusu has seized an opportunity at Zulte Waregem. The young striker has already made an impact during a friendly match against KVS Oudernaarde, where he netted a goal in a comprehensive 6-1 victory, boosting his chances of earning a contract with the Belgian side.
Makusu’s promise first came to international attention during the third edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), where he played a starring role for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Leopards. He scored a vital brace against Burundi in the group stage, securing a 2-1 win that propelled the Leopards into the knockout rounds. His performance earned him the Man of the Match award and a spot on the tournament’s substitute team, highlighting his potential on the continental stage.
If Makusu can convince Zulte Waregem’s coaching staff, this move could mark a fresh start in Europe for the promising forward, allowing him to overcome his previous setback and fulfill the potential that made him one of the DRC’s brightest talents.
