Jean-Florent Ibenge withdraws from Mali coaching race due to family reasons

Jean-Florent Ibenge will not become the next head coach of the Mali national football team, bringing an abrupt end to what had appeared to be a near-finalised appointment.

The experienced Congolese tactician had been strongly linked with the vacant role following the departure of former coach Tom Saintfiet.

The Malian Football Federation had reportedly identified Ibenge as its preferred candidate after an extensive selection process involving several shortlisted names.

However, the deal has now collapsed after Ibenge formally withdrew from consideration, citing family-related reasons. His decision halts what was widely viewed as a significant step in Mali’s search for stability at international level.

Ibenge, a well-travelled coach with extensive experience across African football, was expected to take charge after leaving Tanzanian side Azam FC.

His withdrawal leaves the Malian federation back at square one as it continues its search for a new leader for the national team, nicknamed the Eagles.

The development adds fresh uncertainty to Mali’s preparations for upcoming international commitments, with officials now expected to revisit alternative candidates in the coming days.

For now, the search continues—without the man many had already considered the frontrunner.
