Former Moroccan international Jawad Yamiq has reportedly turned down a proposal from Wydad Casablanca, signaling his intention to remain in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Wehda.
Wydad had approached the 31-year-old defender during the winter transfer window, aiming to bolster their squad ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13.
However, the Khouribga-born player has shown little interest in a return to Morocco’s Botola Pro Inwi, preferring to continue his career in Saudi Arabia.
Yamiq’s decision to stay with Al-Wehda reflects his commitment to the club he joined in 2023 from Spanish side Real Valladolid in a deal worth €1.2 million.
Since his move to the Saudi outfit, the defender has been a regular presence in their backline, solidifying his position as a key figure in their defensive setup.
On the international stage, Yamiq has been a dependable performer for Morocco’s national team, the Atlas Lions, since earning his first cap in 2016.
Over the years, he has accumulated 29 appearances and scored three goals for his country.
His most recent outing came in 2023 during a match against Tanzania in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Yamiq’s decision to decline Wydad’s offer could be influenced by his desire to compete at a high level and the opportunities presented in the Saudi Pro League.
The league has grown significantly in stature in recent years, attracting top talents from around the world, and Yamiq appears keen to continue being part of its rise.
For Wydad, the search for reinforcements continues as they prepare for their Club World Cup campaign.
The Moroccan giants, who are regular contenders in African competitions, have been actively seeking experienced players to enhance their chances of competing against some of the world’s top clubs.
While the club’s interest in bringing back a former Raja Casablanca player like Yamiq highlights their ambitions, it also underscores the challenges Moroccan teams face in competing with the financial allure and competitive environment offered by leagues such as the Saudi Pro League.
Yamiq’s decision reaffirms his focus on his current journey in Saudi Arabia, leaving Wydad to explore alternative options as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of a pivotal tournament.
