Jamie Vardy signs for Burnley as 39-year-old striker begins new Championship chapter

Jamie Vardy has ended speculation over his future by signing a one-year contract with Burnley.

The former England striker, who is 39, will compete in the EFL Championship this season after agreeing to join the club on Sunday. His move brings to a close the uncertainty surrounding his next destination following his departure from Italian side Cremonese.

Vardy said he was delighted to have completed the transfer and spoke warmly about Burnley’s history and supporters.

Vardy scored seven goals and provided three assists in 29 league appearances for Cremonese last season. He left the club after it was relegated to the second tier.

His arrival at Burnley marks the latest stage of a career that has included one of the most remarkable title successes in Premier League history. Vardy spent 13 seasons with Leicester City and became one of the club’s most recognisable figures.

He was a key member of the side that won the Premier League title in 2015-16, when Leicester City completed a historic triumph against expectations. That achievement established Vardy as a central figure in the club’s modern history.

Across all competitions, he made more than 400 appearances for Leicester City and scored 200 goals. His pace, direct running and ability to finish chances made him a defining part of the team during his long spell at the King Power Stadium.

Vardy’s departure from Leicester City followed the conclusion of that 13-season stay, while his year with Cremonese represented his first experience of playing in Italy. After leaving the Italian club, he had been the subject of speculation about where he would continue his career.
