Jamal Musiala ruled out of Borussia Dortmund clash as Bayern Munich take no chances with star midfielder
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has confirmed that Jamal Musiala will miss Saturday’s German Super Cup clash against Borussia Dortmund as the club continues to take a cautious approach to his recovery.
Borussia Dortmund will welcome their fierce rivals to Signal Iduna Park for the opening major fixture of the German season, but Bayern will have to cope without one of their most influential players.
Musiala has been dealing with “treatable absence seizures” after collapsing on the pitch for the second time in four days, prompting further medical assessment and a carefully managed treatment plan.
Kompany said the 23-year-old will not be risked against Dortmund while Bayern’s medical team works to determine the safest route for his return.
“He is not in the squad. It is about him making the adaptation in the treatment,” Kompany told reporters.
Bayern cautious over Musiala return
The decision means Musiala will watch from the sidelines as Bayern attempt to extend their impressive record at Dortmund’s home ground.
Dortmund have won 13 of their 17 Bundesliga matches at Signal Iduna Park, although Bayern have repeatedly enjoyed success in the fixture. One of Dortmund’s two defeats at the stadium came against Bayern, who secured a 3-2 victory there in February.
Bayern are also unbeaten in their last eight visits to Signal Iduna Park, winning seven of those encounters. They will now look to maintain that dominance in the Super Cup despite Musiala’s absence.
The midfielder has sought to reassure supporters about his condition and remains positive about his recovery.
Musiala said he is “very optimistic” and is receiving excellent medical treatment following his falls. “The important thing is that there is no additional health risk,” he wrote.
Another setback for Bayern’s star
Musiala’s latest health concerns come after a difficult period in which injuries have already interrupted his development.
The Bayern star missed the first six months of last season after suffering a serious ankle injury at the 2025 Club World Cup, forcing him to spend an extended spell on the sidelines.
His latest setback has therefore added another layer of uncertainty to his immediate return to competitive football.
For Bayern, however, Saturday’s Super Cup has taken a back seat to ensuring Musiala makes a full and safe recovery.
With the club’s doctors continuing to monitor his condition, Kompany and Bayern will be unwilling to take unnecessary risks with a player regarded as central to their plans.
The German champions must now prepare for Dortmund without Musiala, while the focus remains firmly on getting their young star back to full health before he returns to action.
