Ivory Coast’s AFCON victory sparks celebration in Ghana

Ghaha Nanans

Ghanaians are reveling in the triumph of Ivory Coast over Nigeria in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, adding another layer to the historic football rivalry between the two nations. With a default allegiance to the Elephants, Ghanaian football enthusiasts are relishing the fact that their arch-rivals missed the opportunity to equal their illustrious record.

Maintaining their claim to four AFCON titles, Ghana stands ahead of Nigeria, which now has three.

The Super Eagles fell short in their quest for a fourth title on February 11, 2024, which would have leveled the playing field with the Black Stars.

Given the intense football rivalry between the two nations, Ghanaians unequivocally threw their support behind Ivory Coast, even though it was the same team that had denied them two titles in 1992 and 2015.

As the final whistle blew, sealing the coronation of the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire, Ghanaians erupted in celebration.

The simplicity of the reason behind their joy lies in the fact that not only do Nigerians lose bragging rights over Ghanaian supporters, but the one-star difference between the two football powerhouses remains intact.

Armed with a solid argument of being four-time African champions, Ghanaians are poised to continue the playful banter in the spirited football rivalry.
