AS Monaco welcomes back defender Wilfried Singo, fresh from his triumph at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 with Ivory Coast. A mere four days after the thrilling final against Nigeria (1-2), Singo made a triumphant return to the Rock on Thursday.
In a video shared by the club, the versatile 24-year-old defender playfully teased his teammates, Senegalese Krépin Diatta and Malian Mohamed Camara, both of whom he bested in the earlier rounds of the tournament.
Singo, who boasts 19 caps with the Elephants since his debut in 2021, expressed his gratitude to his teammates during a speech, stating, “Okay, guys, thank you very much for the welcome.
It really makes me happy to bring this cup back to Monaco as I told Krépin Diatta and Mohamed Camara. (…) It was a little duel between us in the locker room, I won it, I’m happy,” with a cheerful smile.
He later reflected on the incredible experience of winning the final in his home country, calling it an “incredible day.”
Having played a pivotal role in Ivory Coast’s AFCON campaign, Singo featured in all seven matches, showcasing consistent and impressive performances throughout the tournament.
His return to AS Monaco, with the coveted AFCON trophy in hand, is highly anticipated, especially given his stellar form with 15 appearances and one goal in Ligue 1 this season.
Monaco has eagerly awaited Singo’s return, marking the final comeback among the six players who were absent for their respective national teams in the Asian and African Nations Cups.
Alongside Japanese player Takumi Minamino, Singo is poised to bolster Monaco’s efforts in securing the second spot in Ligue 1, with the club currently trailing Nice by a slim one-point margin (38 points to Nice’s 39).
His return marks a significant boost for the principality club as they navigate the competitive landscape of French football.
