Ivory Coast’s midfielder Seko Fofana, a pivotal figure in Oumar Diakité’s decisive goal, nearly resisted being substituted, according to revelations from Elephants coach Emerse Faé.

Faé, who assumed coaching duties following the departure of Jean-Louis Gasset during the tournament, disclosed on Talents d’Afrique that he had initially planned to replace the former RC Lens prodigy.

However, Fofana’s competitive spirit almost led to a confrontation with the coaching staff, as he vehemently expressed his desire to remain on the pitch.

“As former players turned coaches, we understand the disappointment a player can feel when being replaced and expressing their displeasure.

We understand that this may be difficult to accept. Seko is a competitor, he wants to stay on the pitch until the end, as we saw against Mali he almost threatened us with Guy (Demel, his deputy) so that we wouldn’t take him out.

He had reactions because he is a competitor but everything was resolved,”* Faé explained.

*The decision to keep Fofana on the field proved pivotal, as he played a crucial role in Ivory Coast’s victory, showcasing his resilience and determination during the intense quarter-final encounter against Mali.

Despite having a limited international career with 20 caps, Fofana’s impact in the tournament was significant, with his notable contribution reflected in the thrilling quarter-final.

As Ivory Coast revels in its AFCON success, the focus now shifts to Seko Fofana’s future with the national team.

Having occasionally faced uncertainty about his commitment, the upcoming matches against Benin (03/23) and Uruguay (03/27) could potentially influence his decision to prolong his international journey.
