Ivory Coast set for World Cup return with attacking depth and selection dilemmas

Ivory Coast will make their long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup after a 12-year absence, having topped their qualifying group ahead of Gabon.

Drawn alongside Ecuador, Germany and Curaçao, the Elephants head into the tournament with growing ambition and a clear objective: reaching the knockout stage for the first time in their history.

Head coach Emerse Faé faces a welcome selection headache, with depth across every department as he shapes his final squad.

Goalkeeping battle

The race for the No.1 jersey is shaping up as a tight contest between Yahia Fofana and Alban Lafont. Fofana is understood to hold a slight edge following strong performances in Turkey, while Mohamed Koné is expected to complete the goalkeeping unit as third choice.

Defensive strength

Ivory Coast’s back line appears among the most settled areas of the squad. Evan Ndicka is expected to anchor the defence, supported by the likes of Odilon Kossounou, Wilfried Singo, Ghislain Konan, Emmanuel Agbadou, Ousmane Diomandé and Strasbourg standout Guéla Doué.

Midfield leadership

In midfield, Ibrahim Sangaré is expected to play a central role after an impressive season in England, while captain Franck Kessié will once again provide leadership and stability. Seko Fofana is also in contention to add further balance and physicality.

Attacking firepower

Up front, attention will focus on Amad Diallo, whose recent form at club level and impact at international tournaments have raised expectations. Emerging talent Yan Diomandé is also tipped to play a significant role.

They are expected to supply service to a forward line that could include dual-national options such as Ange-Yoan Bonny of Inter Milan and Elye Wahi, both of whom are in contention for selection.

Injury questions and final decisions

Veteran striker Sébastien Haller is aiming to overcome fitness concerns after injury setbacks, while uncertainty remains over Nicolas Pépé, who has recently worked his way back into contention following his omission from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations squad.

Faé is expected to make key selection decisions later this week as competition for places intensifies.

Ivory Coast will continue their preparations with a high-profile friendly against France on June 4 in Nantes, a crucial test ahead of their return to football’s biggest stage.
