Ivory Coast: Explosive semi-final twist as Strasbourg welcome back Guéla Doué
RC Strasbourg Alsace coach Gary O’Neil has confirmed that Valentin Barco and Guéla Doué are available again ahead of the club’s decisive UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final second leg against Rayo Vallecano.
The return of the two players comes as a major boost for Strasbourg before Thursday’s match at the Meinau Stadium, where the French side will attempt to overturn a 1-0 defeat suffered in Spain during the first leg last week.
However, the club will remain without striker Emmanuel Emegha, who was injured during the opening encounter against Rayo.
Speaking 24 hours before the match, O’Neil provided an update on the squad during his pre-match press conference and confirmed that both Barco and Doué are ready to return to action after periods on the sidelines.
The Strasbourg manager welcomed the availability of the pair as his side prepare for one of their most important matches of the season.
“Yes, they are both available and will be able to play.
This is good news for the club, as they make the team even better.
They, like the others, are available and will bring their qualities to, I hope, allow us to qualify.
It will be a real plus. But Rayo is a big obstacle,” said the Racing coach, in comments reported by L’Équipe.
Barco has not played since 16 April, while Doué has been absent since 4 April, making their return particularly significant ahead of the semi-final showdown.
Their comeback offers Strasbourg additional depth and experience at a crucial stage of the campaign, especially after the disappointment of the narrow defeat in the first leg.
The French side now face the challenge of overturning the deficit in front of their home supporters if they are to reach the Conference League final.
Emegha’s absence remains a setback for Strasbourg, with the forward unable to recover in time after suffering an injury in Spain.
The striker has been an important attacking presence for the club, and his unavailability leaves O’Neil needing to find alternative solutions in attack for the decisive encounter.
Despite that blow, Strasbourg appear encouraged by the return of two players capable of strengthening both the defensive and midfield balance of the side.
The match at the Meinau Stadium is expected to be one of the biggest European nights for Strasbourg in recent years as they seek a place in the final of the competition.
Rayo Vallecano arrive in France with a narrow advantage after securing victory in the first leg, but the tie remains open heading into the return match.
O’Neil acknowledged the scale of the challenge awaiting his team and warned that the Spanish side would be difficult opponents once again.
The Strasbourg coach nevertheless expressed confidence that the return of key players could help improve the team’s chances of qualification.
Barco’s return is expected to provide additional control and technical quality in midfield, while Doué’s availability gives Strasbourg another option on the right side of defence.
The timing of their recovery could therefore prove decisive as Strasbourg attempt to produce a comeback on home soil.
For the players and supporters, the second leg represents an opportunity to continue an impressive European campaign that has already brought significant attention to the French club.
The atmosphere at the Meinau Stadium is also expected to play an important role as Strasbourg try to respond after the defeat in Spain.
Although the absence of Emegha remains a concern, the return of Barco and Doué has given the squad a timely lift before the decisive semi-final encounter.
With a place in the Conference League final at stake, Strasbourg know they must deliver one of their strongest performances of the season against a Rayo side determined to protect its advantage.
