Ivory Coast defender Bamo Meïté faces crucial career decision as two Ligue 1 clubs circle

Ivory Coast defender Bamo Meïté faces crucial career decision as two Ligue 1 clubs circle

Bamo Meïté has returned to Olympique de Marseille following a loan spell at Montpellier, but his future appears increasingly likely to lie away from the Stade Vélodrome.

Despite being under contract until 2028, the Ivorian defender is not part of new head coach Roberto De Zerbi’s plans.

Signed from FC Lorient in the summer of 2023, Meïté has struggled to establish himself in Marseille’s defence. His short stint at Montpellier during the second half of the 2024–25 season also failed to reignite his momentum, as the club was relegated to Ligue 2. Now back in Marseille, the 23-year-old finds himself surplus to requirements in a squad already undergoing significant transition.

Reports from La Provence indicate that two Ligue 1 clubs—AJ Auxerre and FC Lorient—have emerged as potential destinations for Meïté, both keen to offer him a new platform to rebuild his form and confidence.

Neither club is currently in a financial position to meet Marseille’s estimated €5 million valuation, meaning a loan deal appears the most likely outcome.

For Meïté, a return to Lorient would represent familiar territory. Having come through the ranks and made his name there, the club’s recent promotion back to the top flight could provide a stable environment for his development.

On the other hand, Auxerre, who secured an 11th-place finish in Ligue 1, offer a fresh opportunity with a squad intent on further consolidation in the division.

Both options present contrasting yet compelling prospects for the young defender. Lorient could offer the comfort of known surroundings and potentially more immediate playing time, while Auxerre would be a step into a new challenge with a team that has shown resilience in Ligue 1.

Marseille, meanwhile, are pressing forward with a rebuild under De Zerbi. Defensive changes are expected, and Meïté, alongside experienced centre-back Chancel Mbemba, has reportedly been informed he does not feature in the new manager’s tactical vision.

The club is open to finding new opportunities for both players, as it looks to address long-standing defensive vulnerabilities.

The coming weeks will be crucial for Meïté, whose decision could shape the next phase of his career. Having yet to fully realise his early potential, the need for consistent game time and a supportive footballing environment has never been greater.

Whether he chooses a return to a familiar club or a new challenge with Auxerre, the loan move will likely be decisive—not only for his club future, but also for his aspirations at the international level with the Ivory Coast.

With the transfer window now open and pre-season preparations beginning shortly, a decision is expected soon. For Meïté, the next step must be carefully considered—an opportunity to reset, prove himself, and get back on track.
