Didier Drogba, has conveyed his immense joy at Ivory Coast’s privilege to host the 34th edition of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The West African nation is set to orchestrate the continent’s premier football spectacle between January 13 and February 11, featuring the participation of 24 nations in the quest for Africa’s most coveted football trophy.
Drogba, the all-time leading goalscorer for Cote d’Ivoire with an impressive tally of 65 goals, expressed profound pride in witnessing his homeland take center stage in hosting this monumental tournament.
Reflecting on the significance of this event, he remarked, “It brings a sense of pride for me.
The last time was in 1984. The fact of having worn the jersey of the national team and now seeing the tournament hosted on home soil is exceptional.
We are very happy to welcome all of Africa. It is going to be a party.”
The football maestro, who played in two AFCON finals in 2006 and 2012, shared his memories of the tournament, highlighting its significance for African football.
Drogba reminisced about being inspired by legends like Roger Milla, Gadji Celi, and Youssouf Fofana, emphasizing that AFCON is a celebration of African football, uniting the continent for a month.
