Ousmane Diomandé returns to the Ivory Coast national team following Evan Ndicka’s withdrawal for medical reasons, the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) confirmed.
The Sporting Lisbon defender joins the squad ahead of friendly matches against Saudi Arabia and Oman, offering him a chance to strengthen the Ivorian defense.
Diomandé struggled with a muscle injury at the start of the season but regained full fitness and has featured regularly for Sporting Lisbon in both the Portuguese league and the Champions League since October.
His performances have impressed coaches, earning him this timely call-up to the national squad.
The defender’s last appearance for the Elephants came on 24 March 2025, in a 1-0 victory over Gambia at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium.
Returning to the team provides him an opportunity to re-establish himself as a key figure in the backline ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
FIF highlighted the decision as a strategic move to maintain defensive stability in preparation for the upcoming friendlies.
The matches against Saudi Arabia and Oman will allow the coaching staff to assess squad depth, experiment with tactical options, and integrate players returning from injury, including Diomandé.
Coaches emphasised the importance of Diomandé’s experience and match fitness, noting that his inclusion strengthens the team’s defensive options.
The Elephants’ squad now focuses on building cohesion, sharpening defensive coordination, and preparing for competitive challenges in 2025.
Diomandé’s reintegration into the national setup also reflects Ivory Coast’s ongoing commitment to blending experienced players with emerging talent.
His performances in Portugal suggest he can contribute immediately while adapting to the team’s tactical approach.
