Jean‑Philippe Gbamin has returned to Ligue 1, signing a one‑year contract with FC Metz after departing Swiss club FC Zurich at the end of his deal.
The 29‑year‑old Ivorian midfielder, who has represented his national team on several occasions, officially joined Metz on 15 July 2025 and is set to play a key role in the club’s efforts to remain in France’s top division following promotion.
Gbamin’s move marks a return to familiar territory. Having been trained at RC Lens and featured for clubs such as Dunkerque and Nantes earlier in his career, he is no stranger to French football.
His resume also includes notable stints abroad, including with Mainz in the Bundesliga, Everton in the Premier League, and loan spells at CSKA Moscow and Trabzonspor.
His time at FC Zurich was brief but served as a stepping stone back to Ligue 1, where he now looks to establish stability after a career disrupted by injuries and transfers.
Despite past setbacks, Gbamin remains a player with high potential, known for his ability to operate both as a holding midfielder and central defender.
In his first comments as a Metz player, Gbamin expressed both optimism and a sense of belonging. He cited his desire to return to a familiar environment and be close to family as a major factor in his decision.
The move, he explained, was one of both heart and mind, as Metz provides an opportunity to play a central role in a team with clear ambitions.
Beyond club performance, Gbamin also has his eyes on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, hoping that a successful spell in Ligue 1 will earn him a place in the Ivorian national squad for the continental tournament.
FC Metz’s decision to bring in an experienced figure like Gbamin reflects their broader strategy to blend youth with proven talent in order to remain competitive in Ligue 1.
His presence is expected to add depth and leadership to the squad, particularly in high-pressure fixtures throughout the campaign.
The midfielder’s contract runs until June 2026, giving him a full season to reassert his value on the pitch. Gbamin’s recent valuation stands at €2 million, and during his time at FC Nantes, he was reported to earn an annual salary of over €1 million.
This new chapter in Gbamin’s career represents both a return and a fresh start—an opportunity to relaunch his career in a setting he knows well, at a club where he feels confident he can contribute meaningfully on and off the pitch.
