Amadou Koné is leaving Stade de Reims to join Saudi club Neom SC, marking a significant new chapter in the young Ivorian midfielder’s rapidly developing career.
At just 20, Koné has made a notable impact since arriving in Ligue 1 from Afrique Football Elite (Mali) in the summer of 2023.
Initially assigned to the Pro 2 squad under Franck Chalençon, his potential quickly earned him a promotion.
Head coach Will Still handed him his Ligue 1 debut against Toulouse in October 2023, and by January, he had made his first start in the top flight during a match against Nantes.
Koné’s rise was swift and impactful. Over two seasons, he featured in 48 matches for Reims, 30 of those coming in the most recent campaign.
Known as “The Building” by teammates — a nod to his physical dominance and composure in duels — the Ivorian earned a reputation as one of Ligue 1’s most promising young midfielders.
His statistics reinforced that reputation. Among midfielders under the age of 23 across Europe’s top five leagues, Koné ranked in the top four for defensive duels won.
He also placed in the top four among U21 midfielders for successful dribbles.
Beyond the numbers, his sharp positional sense, ability to progress the ball, and relentless work rate established him as a mainstay in the Reims midfield.
His performances also earned him a call-up to the Ivorian U23 national team.
Koné now moves on to Neom SC, a growing force in Saudi football, where he will face the challenge of adapting to a new league and continuing his development in a different footballing environment.
