Souleyman Doumbia is set to continue his career in Major League Soccer after sealing a loan move to Charlotte FC from Standard Liège.
The Ivorian left-back, who was absent from Standard’s squad in their recent 3-0 defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise, has traveled to the United States to finalize his transfer.
The deal will keep him at Charlotte until the end of the season, but it does not include an option to buy.
Struggles at Standard Liège
Doumbia arrived at Standard as a free agent in January 2024 but has struggled to make an impact.
Injuries, particularly recurring hamstring problems, have severely hampered his playing time.
Since his arrival, the 28-year-old has made just 11 appearances, accumulating 226 minutes on the pitch.
Despite his fitness struggles, Standard exercised a two-year extension on his contract, keeping him tied to the club until June 2026.
However, with his role diminishing, the decision was made to send him on loan in search of regular playing time.
Opportunity for revival in MLS
Moving to Charlotte FC presents Doumbia with an opportunity to regain match fitness and re-establish himself as a key player.
Charlotte, competing in its third season in MLS, will be hoping the Ivorian defender can strengthen their squad and bring experience from his time in European football.
While this move provides Doumbia with a fresh start, his long-term future at Standard Liège remains uncertain.
If he manages to impress in MLS and stay injury-free, he could either work his way back into Standard’s plans or attract interest from other clubs for a permanent move.
For now, the priority for the Ivorian international will be to prove his worth on the pitch and make the most of his time in the United States.
