Odilon Kossounou has expressed a clear desire to remain in Italy, signalling his intention to continue his career at Atalanta beyond the current season.
The Ivorian international, who joined Atalanta on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, is reportedly eager to make his stay in Bergamo permanent.
According to German outlet Kicker, the 23-year-old defender has informed his representatives that he is not interested in a return to the Bundesliga and would prefer to remain in Serie A, where he feels he has found both form and stability.
Kossounou, who previously made a name for himself at Club Brugge before moving to Germany, has been a regular feature in Atalanta’s defensive line-up since his arrival.
His performances under Gian Piero Gasperini have impressed both supporters and coaching staff, and his seamless adaptation to the tactical rigours of Italian football has only strengthened his case for a permanent deal.
Atalanta, who negotiated a purchase option as part of the loan agreement, have until the end of May to trigger that clause and secure Kossounou’s services on a full-time basis.
With the player publicly aligning his future with the club, the ball is now firmly in Atalanta’s court.
“The former Club Brugge player has reportedly already communicated to his agents his keen interest in continuing his career with the DEA,” Kicker reported, referring to Atalanta by their nickname.
“This statement highlights his adaptation and development within the Italian club and the Serie A championship.”
The prospect of a long-term stay in Bergamo is not only a personal goal for Kossounou but could also benefit Atalanta as they aim to bolster their defensive unit for the future.
His pace, composure on the ball, and ability to read the game have added depth to the club’s back line, and his continued presence would offer continuity heading into the next campaign.
Should Atalanta choose to activate the option, Kossounou would likely sign a multi-year deal, formalising a partnership that has already shown strong potential.
The coming weeks will be decisive as club officials weigh their options. For now, Kossounou’s message is unambiguous: his heart is in Bergamo, and he is ready to commit.
