Eric Bailly is set to embark on a new chapter in his career by joining Saudi Pro League newcomers Al Najmah SC, following the end of his contract with Spanish club Villarreal.
The Ivorian centre-back, now 31, has opted for the ambitious project in Saudi Arabia despite reported interest from clubs in La Liga and the Turkish Süper Lig.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Bailly will sign with Al Najmah in what marks a bold and unexpected move at a pivotal moment in his career.
After a quiet stint in Spain that saw him make only a handful of appearances last season, Bailly now heads to a league that continues to draw international attention.
Al Najmah, freshly promoted to the Saudi top flight, is looking to reinforce its squad with experienced leaders.
Bailly, a veteran of nearly 50 international caps and a key figure in Ivory Coast’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations-winning side, fits the profile of a stabilising presence at the heart of defence.
Although he had been approached by several European clubs, notably in La Liga and the Süper Lig, it was ultimately Al Najmah’s ambitious project that convinced him, said a source close to the deal.
The decision, however, comes with its share of risks.
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Morocco this winter, looms large for Bailly and the Ivorian national team.
Having only recently returned to the international fold in October 2024 after a challenging period, the defender’s form will be under intense scrutiny.

The Saudi Pro League’s competitive level remains a subject of debate, and any dip in performance could threaten his inclusion in Ivory Coast’s squad as they aim to defend their continental crown.
Last season, Bailly’s lack of consistent playing time raised questions about his fitness and match sharpness.
His move to Saudi Arabia, while potentially lucrative and reinvigorating, will place added pressure on him to perform at a consistently high level if he hopes to stay in contention for national selection.
With the Ivorian defence undergoing generational changes, competition for places is fierce.
Bailly’s experience gives him an edge, but only sustained form and leadership will keep him in the conversation.
As he prepares for life in the Gulf, the stakes could not be higher.
