Joseph Antoine Bell, the former Cameroonian international goalkeeper, was the guest of honor at the launch conference of the African Football Night in Abidjan on February 18. In an interview, he shared his thoughts on the event and its significance for African football.
Bell expressed his support for the African Football Night initiative, citing the importance of events held on the continent itself. He emphasized the need for African-focused events and encouraged attendance to foster a sense of community and leave a lasting impact on football history.
Regarding his alleged appearance at another event called the Great Night of African Football in Dakar on May 21, Bell clarified that he had not received any contact or invitation for this event. He criticized the lack of communication and organization surrounding such announcements, attributing it to what he described as “African lightness.”
When asked about the retraining of African footballers after retirement, Bell acknowledged the challenges they face but highlighted the broader issue of retraining for retirees worldwide. He stressed the importance of societal factors and called for greater involvement from federations and public authorities to support footballers in their transition.
Regarding the upcoming World Cup, Bell refrained from expressing bias towards any African team, stating that he would wait for the competition to begin before forming any preferences.
Overall, Bell conveyed his support for African football initiatives while advocating for better organization and support systems for retired footballers in Africa.
