South African international goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, is set to make a comeback for Kaizer Chiefs after a month-long suspension for misconduct. The veteran player is slated to feature in the PSL All Star team facing Stellenbosch FC in the Black Label Cup at Peter Mokaba Stadium this Saturday.
Khune, who faced disciplinary action by the Chiefs just over two weeks ago, received a positive vote from fans, earning his place in the PSL All Star lineup.
Despite recent challenges, the 36-year-old goalkeeper is determined to deliver a stellar performance and showcase his commitment to both the club and its loyal supporters.
Acknowledging that his playing career at the highest level may be limited due to age, Khune expressed his dedication to giving his best on the field.
In an interview with local media, he emphasized the importance of not underestimating the upcoming match, highlighting the team’s hunger for success.
“I think it’s very important that we don’t take this match for granted…Any player would have been on vacation, with family or with the national team, but we all decided to honor the call-up.
I think it shows how hungry we are and how competitive we will be on Saturday against the Black Label Cup winners,” said Khune.
Despite the positive outlook for the match, Khune’s future with Kaizer Chiefs remains uncertain. Following his suspension and removal as captain, internal voices within the club advocate for his swift departure.
While some see potential in his contribution through mentoring younger players, the management is actively seeking a replacement.
In an intriguing turn of events, Khune views his current situation as a “blessing in disguise,” indicating his willingness to comply with the club’s demands. However, the Chiefs’ leadership appears to be moving towards parting ways with the legendary goalkeeper, citing economic considerations and image considerations as key factors.
As Khune prepares for his return to the field, the looming question remains whether this marks a new chapter with Kaizer Chiefs or the dawn of a different journey for the revered goalkeeper.
