‘It’s really unfortunate’ – Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson laments Issa Kabore injury setback
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson described Issa Kabore’s recent injury as unfortunate, highlighting the setback for both club and player.
Kabore, 24, born in Burkina Faso, has spent time on loan from Manchester City at Mechelen, Troyes, Marseille, Luton Town, Benfica, and Werder Bremen before joining Wrexham in the Championship.
The versatile wing-back had featured in Wrexham’s last ten matches, gradually cementing his role in Parkinson’s squad.
However, he sustained a significant injury while representing Burkina Faso in a 3-0 friendly win over Benin.
“It is really unfortunate for Issa,” Parkinson said. “He’s obviously playing well and it looks like it is going to be at least a six-week injury.”
Parkinson explained that the news came via physio Kevin Mulholland, and while disappointing, such risks are inherent when players travel long distances for international duty.
“But it’s always that risk when players are travelling long distances and playing, they can get an injury, and I’m sure there are other teams who will have lost players through this international break,” he said.
The injury also puts Kabore’s participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in jeopardy.
Parkinson stressed the importance of the defender to both Wrexham and Burkina Faso.
“Issa’s been a great character to have with us and we’ll get him back. It will be a combination of treatment from Manchester City, because he lives close to the training ground, and with us as well,” he said.
The Wrexham boss acknowledged Kabore’s key role for his national side.
“Obviously, the Africa Cup of Nations is coming up as well. I’ve watched a couple of games and Issa seems to be one of the important players, but obviously he’s got to be fit and that’s going to be touch and go.”
Parkinson confirmed the club will closely monitor Kabore’s recovery to ensure he returns safely to both club and international duty.
