Italian authorities are moving swiftly in the “Calcioscommesse” match-fixing scandal. Four individuals were arrested, and around thirty Serie A matches are under scrutiny. Gennaro Gattuso, the 2006 World Cup champion and retired footballer, had his home searched and is set to be questioned for his connections to one of the arrested individuals. The investigation focuses on potential contacts between players or managers and Francesco Bazzani, one of the arrested. The probe examines suspicious matches in Italian lower divisions for player-punter contacts before games. The arrested individuals allegedly served as a link between underground betting and footballers. Gattuso is suspected of “criminal association for the purposes of sporting fraud” related to the Chievo Verona-Milan match in 2011. This is part of broader investigations, marking the third intervention by the Cremona Prosecutor’s Office in the “Calcioscommesse” affair.
