“It would surprise me if I’m not called up” –Utrecht defender El Karouani confident of Morocco selection
FC Utrecht defender Souffian El Karouani has expressed strong belief that his performances deserve a place in the Morocco next squad, though he admits the final decision ultimately rests with the coach.
The left-back, who currently plays for FC Utrecht in the Eredivisie, has been one of the consistent performers for his club this season and believes his form merits national team recognition.
Speaking about his chances of being included in the upcoming squad, El Karouani made it clear that he feels ready to take the next step with the Atlas Lions.
“Personally, I think I should be there. But ultimately, it’s the coach who makes the decision,” he said.
The defender emphasized that his focus remains on maintaining strong performances at club level, insisting that continuing to deliver week after week is the best way to earn a call-up.
“For my part, I simply have to continue showing my level every week. We’ll have to wait to find out if I’ll be on the list,” he added.
Despite leaving the decision to the national team’s technical staff, El Karouani admitted that missing out on the squad would come as a surprise given his current form.
“But it would be a surprise to me if I weren’t,” he stated confidently.
El Karouani has built a reputation as an energetic full-back known for his attacking runs, defensive discipline, and ability to deliver dangerous crosses from the left flank. His performances in the Dutch top flight have not gone unnoticed, and many observers believe he could provide valuable competition for places in Morocco’s defensive setup.
With Morocco continuing preparations for upcoming international fixtures and major tournaments, competition for places in the Atlas Lions squad remains intense. Nevertheless, El Karouani appears determined to keep pushing for recognition and hopes his consistent displays with FC Utrecht will soon earn him the opportunity to represent his country on the international stage.
