Calvin Bassey has expressed disappointment with officiating after Fulham’s clash with Manchester United, arguing that the visitors’ goal should never have stood.
The Nigerian defender was left fuming after United’s breakthrough, which came when Leny Yoro rose above him to head the ball into the box before it deflected off Rodrigo Muniz for the opener.
Fulham players immediately surrounded the referee, protesting that Yoro had pushed Bassey in the back before making contact. Despite their appeals, the goal was allowed to stand, leaving the home side frustrated.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Bassey made clear his stance on the incident. “It is enough for me to not be able to win the ball and it is an advantage to him. It should have been disallowed,” he said, visibly frustrated.
The defender added that he felt the referee would regret the call once he had the opportunity to review it.
“When the referee looks back at it I think they will be disappointed. I cannot say too much, otherwise I will get a fine!”
Bassey stressed how small margins can alter duels in the air, especially for defenders.
“It is a foul. When you go up to a jump, any little touch can put you off. He wasn’t trying to speak to me – he was trying to speak to my captain. What do you want me to do? Jump on the floor. It is enough for me to not be able to win the ball.”
Fulham’s frustrations added to an already tense atmosphere at Craven Cottage, with manager Ruben Amorim also seen in heated exchanges on the touchline.
