Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has raised concerns about the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s campaign promise to implement a 24-hour economy, suggesting that such a system is already in place in certain sectors.
Gyan shared his thoughts during an Instagram Live session, pointing out that essential services like police stations, hospitals, and gas stations already operate 24/7.
“It already exists. Police stations, hospitals, and filling stations already operate on a 24-hour basis. So, if the government says ‘24-hour economy,’ they should clarify that they intend to improve it, not introduce something entirely new,” Gyan stated.
His remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the 24-hour economy initiative, a key campaign promise by former President John Mahama and the NDC ahead of the 2024 general elections.
The proposed policy is designed to stimulate economic growth by encouraging businesses to operate around the clock, with a focus on job creation, particularly in the informal sector.
Critics, including Gyan, argue that the concept is already operational in certain critical areas. However, supporters contend that the plan aims to extend beyond these services, seeking to integrate broader sectors such as retail, transportation, and entertainment into a fully functioning 24-hour economy.
John Mahama won the 2024 elections and has vowed to implement the policy once he assumes office on January 7, 2025.
