Issa Diop reveals emotional impact after Morocco debut
Issa Diop has described an unexpected emotional response after making his first appearances for Morocco, revealing that representing the national team gave him a feeling he had not anticipated.
The Fulham defender, Issa Diop, was called up for the first time by coach Mohamed Ouahbi and went on to feature in matches against Ecuador and Paraguay on March 27 and 31. Morocco drew 1-1 with Ecuador before securing a 2-1 victory over Paraguay, with Diop playing his part in both games.
While his decision to represent Morocco came after careful thought, the emotional weight of the experience quickly became clear after his debut.
Speaking through his agent in an interview with Rondo TV, Diop reflected on the moment he first wore the national shirt.
“After the match, he told me: ‘When you’re wearing the national team jersey, it’s not the same. You feel something.’ He was very moved. Something he hadn’t imagined had happened inside him.”
The experience went beyond football alone. The atmosphere of international duty, the singing of the national anthem, and the intensity of the supporters left a strong impression on the defender, who previously played for Toulouse and West Ham.
For Diop, the decision was also shaped by the wider vision of Moroccan football under the leadership of Fouzi Lekjaa and the national team’s technical staff.
The structure and long-term planning of the setup played a significant role in convincing him to commit to Morocco, alongside his personal connection to the country.
The work of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has also been credited with strengthening the national team project, particularly in attracting players with dual eligibility.
Ambition remains a key factor in Diop’s international future, with the prospect of the 2026 World Cup also forming part of his motivation. The tournament is seen as a major target for Morocco as they continue building a competitive squad.
With two solid performances already under his belt, Diop is now viewed as a potential long-term option in Morocco’s defensive setup as preparations continue for upcoming international challenges.
