Islam Slimani, the all-time top scorer for the Algerian national team and striker for Belgian club Mechelen, has made a definitive decision regarding his international career.
Following the disappointment of an early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, rumors circulated suggesting Slimani, along with several other key Algerian players, might retire from international football.
However, Qatar-based website “Win Win” cited its own sources, revealing that Slimani has no intention of retiring from international football whatsoever.
The former CR Belouizdad player believes the current situation allows him to remain within the squad, especially considering the limited options in his position.
With Baghdad Bounedjah being the only available choice upfront, Slimani sees himself as a valuable asset, particularly with Yacine Brahimi and Said Benrahma often deployed on the left wing.
Moreover, the same source indicated that Slimani plans to continue his international career until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, considering it one of his primary objectives before retiring.
He aims to redeem the significant setback of failing to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 editions.
Conversely, the Qatari website also reported, based on its sources, that Slimani is keen to utilize the March training camp to establish a closer relationship with the new coach, Vahid Halilhodžić.
He intends to engage directly with him regarding his situation and reassure him that he remains capable of contributing to the national team in the upcoming period.
