Isaac Schmidt: Switzerland-Nigeria defender joins Young Boys from Leeds

Isaac Schmidt, the Switzerland-Nigeria left-back, has joined Young Boys from Leeds United on a move that takes him back to the Swiss Super League. The 26-year-old has signed a contract with the Bern club until 30 June 2030.

Schmidt returns to Switzerland after a spell in England with Leeds, who signed him from FC St. Gallen in August 2024. During his time at Elland Road he also spent a loan period in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen in the 2025-26 season before heading back to Leeds at the end of that campaign.

Born in Lausanne and standing at 1.72m, Schmidt is primarily a left-back but is right-footed, offering Young Boys versatility on the flank. He has built solid experience in the Swiss top flight, making almost 100 Super League appearances and contributing goals and assists from defence.

Before moving abroad, Schmidt’s performances for Lausanne-Sport and then St. Gallen earned him a reputation as a consistent performer in domestic competition. He previously helped Lausanne-Sport win promotion as Swiss second-tier champions in 2019-20 and later added an English Championship title with Leeds in 2024-25.

Schmidt’s arrival strengthens Young Boys’ defensive options ahead of the new Super League campaign, with the club securing the defender on a four-year deal from Leeds United.
