Inzaghi reveals the qualities that convinced Al Hilal to sign Ollie Watkins

Simone Inzaghi says Al Hilal’s decision to sign Ollie Watkins was driven by the English forward’s qualities and suitability for the team, rather than simply being a reaction to Karim Benzema’s departure.

Al Hilal ended its association with Benzema by mutual consent before confirming a three-year contract for Watkins. The move forms part of a reshaping of the club’s attack, with the former Aston Villa striker beginning a new chapter under Inzaghi in one of the strongest competitions in the Roshn Saudi League.

Speaking at the news conference before Al Hilal’s postponed third-round match against Al Ahli, Inzaghi paid tribute to Benzema while explaining why Watkins had become the preferred option.

“We thank Benzema for everything he gave. He is a great player and I was honoured to coach him. As for Watkins, he has outstanding qualities. I have been following him since last season, as has the sporting management, and I admire his skills and the way he plays,” said Inzaghi.

The Italian’s comments indicate that Watkins’ arrival had been considered before Benzema’s exit, rather than being an emergency signing made to fill the space left by the France international.

Watkins had attracted the attention of both Inzaghi and Al Hilal’s sporting department through his playing style and technical ability. The club therefore identified him as a forward capable of becoming one of the main attacking figures in its next phase.

Inzaghi also provided an update on Watkins and Hassan Tambakti ahead of the meeting with Al Ahli. Both players have trained with the squad, but their involvement will depend on their condition during the final training session before the match.

“The two players trained with the team, and we will decide whether they play based on their readiness in today’s training session,” added Inzaghi.

The Al Hilal manager expects a demanding contest against Al Ahli, who will be looking to respond after losing their most recent match. Inzaghi said his side understood the challenge but would approach the game with confidence and determination.

“We know that the match against Al Ahli will be difficult. We are ready for it and we will go into the game with full strength,” he said.

Inzaghi has faced Al Ahli three times during the previous season and believes that experience has given Al Hilal a clear understanding of their opponents’ approach.

“I faced Al Ahli three times last season and we know their style and method of play. They are coming into the match after a defeat, so they will try to make amends. But Al Hilal are a big team and we will try to give everything we can,” he said.

The remarks bring an end to speculation that Watkins was signed merely as a replacement for a high-profile departure. Instead, Inzaghi has stressed that the move reflected a deliberate footballing choice based on the striker’s characteristics.

Attention will now turn to Watkins’ first appearances for Al Hilal and whether he can convert his manager’s admiration into goals and a decisive impact on the pitch.
