Cameroon drop in FIFA rankings as André Onana suffers injury blow at Manchester United

Inter Milan are reportedly weighing up an unexpected bid to re-sign Andre Onana from Manchester United after the Cameroonian goalkeeper was left out of the starting lineup in Sunday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.

According to The Sun, the Nerazzurri are closely monitoring the 29-year-old’s situation at Old Trafford, as uncertainty grows over his place under new United boss Ruben Amorim.

Onana, who left San Siro for Manchester in the summer of 2023, has struggled to deliver consistent performances during his time in England. His omission from the opening-day defeat to Arsenal has further fuelled speculation that his future could lie away from Old Trafford.

Amorim handed a surprise start to Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, a decision that immediately raised questions over Onana’s standing in the squad. Ahead of the game, Amorim sought to play down the decision, framing it as a matter of squad balance and competition.

“It’s an option. We try to choose the best players for each game. Next week is a different life and in this week we chose this way,” Amorim told Sky Sports.

Pressed on whether Onana’s absence was injury-related, the Portuguese manager was emphatic: “No, no (not an injury). He (Onana) will recover but the guys did so well in pre-season so I need to balance that.”

Onana’s situation has not gone unnoticed in Italy, where Inter remain fond of the goalkeeper who was pivotal in their run to the 2023 Champions League final before sealing his move to the Premier League.

Although the Serie A side have Yann Sommer as their current number one, reports suggest they would not hesitate to explore the possibility of bringing Onana back should the opportunity arise.

For United, the immediate question is whether Amorim’s choice signals a long-term shift in goalkeeping preference or simply a tactical move for a specific fixture.
