Emmanuel Dennis faces an uncertain next step in his career after Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir declined their purchase option on the Nigerian forward.
Dennis joined Basaksehir on a season-long loan from Nottingham Forest last September aiming to rediscover his most influential form under manager Cagdas Atan.
However, injuries have restricted the 26-year-old to just eight Super Lig outings without registering a goal or assist since arriving in Turkey.
It’s a spell that has fallen well short of expectations for the versatile striker who thrived for Belgian side Club Brugge earlier in his career.
As a result, Basaksehir will not seek to sign Dennis permanently, according to reports, with the player set to return to parent club Nottingham Forest.
Having scored 10 Premier League goals across 18 months at Watford before joining Forest, inconsistent fitness has stalled Dennis’ progress of late.
Yet despite his recent struggles, the Nigeria international received a provisional call-up this week ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations squad announcement.
With Forest enduring difficulties this season, Dennis could still have a Premier League future at the City Ground upon returning to England.
But Forest may also seek to cash in on a player tied to a long-term contract should lucrative permanent offers arise.
Either way, after bright early Basaksehir displays, injury issues have clouded Dennis’ outlook moving forward.
