Athletic Club’s preparations for their crucial UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg against Rangers have been overshadowed by injury concerns, notably the uncertain status of forward Iñaki Williams.
The Ghana international was absent from Monday’s training session after sustaining a muscle overload in his left adductor during the recent 3-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano.
Williams, who entered the match in the 59th minute, was substituted before the final whistle due to discomfort.
Head coach Ernesto Valverde indicated that Williams’ withdrawal was a precautionary measure to prevent further injury.
The club has not confirmed his availability for Thursday’s decisive fixture at San Mamés, leaving his participation in doubt.
Adding to the team’s injury woes, defender Yuri Berchiche is also a doubt for the upcoming match.
Berchiche is recovering from a mild to moderate muscle injury in his right leg, sustained during the match against Villarreal on April 6.
He missed the game against Rayo Vallecano and is undergoing treatment in hopes of returning to fitness.
The first leg between Athletic Bilbao and Rangers concluded in a goalless draw at Ibrox Stadium, setting the stage for a decisive second leg.
A victory at home would secure Athletic’s progression to the semi-finals of the competition.
