Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat is set to undergo surgery on his right ankle in the Netherlands later this week, after months of persistent discomfort that conservative treatment failed to resolve.
The injury dates back to a collision with Isco earlier in the season and has continued to affect the midfielder despite repeated attempts to manage the issue without surgery.
The decision to operate was made following consultations involving all parties: Real Betis, the Moroccan national team, Fenerbahçe, and the player himself.
An agreement was reached several days ago, with surgery now considered the most viable option. Amrabat remains on loan at Betis from the Turkish club until the end of the season.
The operation is scheduled to take place after the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Amrabat did not feature in the final but stayed close to the squad and was seen supporting Betis teammate Abde Ezzalzouli.
Concerns about Amrabat’s fitness emerged early in the tournament. He played in Morocco’s first two matches but was soon limited by physical discomfort, spending the remainder of the competition on the bench.
Within the Betis camp, anxiety grew as the issue showed no clear signs of improvement. The decision to proceed with surgery marks a decisive stage in his recovery, with a clearer return date expected once rehabilitation begins in Seville.
At the club, caution has been central to every step of the process. Head coach Manuel Pellegrini had previously hinted at the midfielder’s ongoing physical struggles in recent press appearances, and it was widely understood that Amrabat was not at full fitness during Morocco’s most crucial moments at AFCON.
