Athletic Bilbao has declared that Inaki Williams, the Ghanaian striker, is presently unavailable for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to his medical condition, necessitating a period of rest. This development has stirred concern among Ghanaians and cast a shadow over Williams’ anticipated participation in the tournament.

The announcement from Athletic Bilbao came via a press release, revealing that Williams underwent examinations at the club’s medical facilities in Lezama.

The medical evaluation indicated a general condition that calls for a period of rest, with the Ghanaian international already receiving a prescribed treatment.

Williams is set to undergo further evaluation on Tuesday, following which the club will determine his fitness to join the Black Stars’ assembly camp in Ghana.

While no definitive statement has been issued regarding Williams’ availability, the timing of this news raises questions about his potential absence from the Ghanaian squad.

The 29-year-old forward had previously affirmed his readiness to participate, even before being included in Chris Hughton’s final squad unveiled on January 1, 2024. The sudden disclosure by Athletic Bilbao, on the eve of Ghana’s departure for the tournament, adds an element of uncertainty.

Compounding the situation, the approach taken by Athletic Bilbao has drawn attention for potential non-compliance with FIFA regulations.

FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, outlined in Page 43, state that a player unable to comply with a national team summons due to injury or illness must undergo a medical examination at the request of the national association.

The examination can be conducted either in the territory of the association or in the association with which the player is registered. This provision seems not to align with the circumstances surrounding Inaki Williams.

As Ghanaians await further developments, the uncertainty surrounding Inaki Williams’ availability adds an unexpected dimension to the Black Stars’ preparations for AFCON 2023.
