Al-Ahly has dismissed any speculation about disciplinary action against midfielder Imam Ashour following his reaction during a recent match substitution.
Head coach Marcel Koller brought Ashour on in the 88th minute, replacing Akram Tawfiq. However, Ashour’s visible frustration during the change led to speculation about possible consequences. The midfielder was seen gesturing toward the stands, prompting discussions among fans and analysts.
A source within Al-Ahly’s technical staff clarified the situation, telling Kooora, “Imam Ashour only signaled for silence toward a fan.”
The source added, “He’s human and has limits. When he performs well, stays committed on and off the pitch, and then faces unfair criticism, it’s understandable. His reaction was controlled, given what happened.”
Muhammad Shawky, Al-Ahly’s deputy sports director, was reportedly nearby and witnessed the incident firsthand. The source confirmed, “Ashour didn’t cross the line. If he had, Shawky would have taken immediate action.”
With the matter settled internally, Al-Ahly now turns its attention to the highly anticipated clash against Zamalek on Tuesday at Cairo Stadium in the first round of the coronation stage.
