Former Nigeria international Emmanuel Emenike has responded to Jamie Carragher’s controversial comment about the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), saying he is proud to have won the said trophy during his playing days.
The former Liverpool and England international recently sparked outrage, claiming the continental showpiece is not one of football’s major tournaments.
Carragher recently downplayed the significance of AFCON when discussing Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or chances following his outstanding performance this season.
His comment has received several backlash from several African football legends, including Nigeria duo of Augustine Azuka Okocha and Mikel Obi.
However, Emenike, who won the AFCON Golden boot in his prime has joined the masses to condemn Carragher’s disrespectful comment against the AFCON.
“I’m proud to be an AFCON and Golden Boot winner for my beloved country. This is the proudest achievement of my life. Thank God I’m a Nigerian.” He said.
Salah keeps lighting up the Premier League this season, leading Liverpool’s charge for the title.
He has racked up 30 goals and provided 22 assists across competitions this season.
