‘I’m happy here’ – Arteta reveals French-Cameroonian defender William Saliba’s answer to Real Madrid speculation
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that William Saliba has pledged his future to the club despite mounting speculation linking him with Real Madrid.
Arteta confirmed that he held direct talks with the 24-year-old centre-back amid reports of interest from the European champions and came away reassured by the player’s commitment to the Gunners.
Born in Bondy, France, but of Cameroonian heritage, Saliba has long been regarded as one of Arsenal’s most important defensive figures.
His rapid rise under Arteta has attracted attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, but the player’s background and family values have often been cited as key influences on his grounded approach.
“I was quite direct with him,” Arteta told reporters. “When you hear that noise, you can understand people’s expectations.
“People have feelings, they have been educated in their families, maybe dreaming about something one day. That’s a really natural thing to have.
“I sat down with William and asked him that question. He said: ‘No, I want to stay here and play for you, I’m very happy as always.’ That’s great to hear.”
Arteta added that only a small number of clubs could realistically attempt to prise Saliba away from Arsenal.
“We don’t have to name many teams, but there are not that many who can come and get Willy out from Arsenal and him being happy to discuss it. He was so transparent and honest.”
Reports in England suggest that Saliba is poised to sign a new five-year contract that will cement his status as one of the Premier League’s most valuable defenders.
