Nigerian football star Odion Ighalo has expressed disappointment regarding the scant inclusion of local players in the provisional Super Eagles squad for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Coach Jose Peseiro submitted a list of 41 players to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), with only three local goalkeepers—Ojo Olorunleke, Amas Obasogie, and Christian Nwoke—making the cut.
In a candid statement, Ighalo voiced his discontent, asserting that local players deserved more representation in the squad.
He emphasized the importance of encouraging and acknowledging players performing in their home country.
“I don’t think it’s fair not to invite players playing in their country.
It’s a list of 40 players; at least five to seven players should be on the list to encourage them. Not inviting them means that we are not focusing on the championship,” remarked Ighalo during an interview with Oma Sports.
The decision on whether the trio of Olorunleke, Obasogie, and Nwoke will secure a spot in the final list of 27 players for AFCON 2023 remains uncertain.
Ighalo’s stance reflects a broader sentiment among players and football enthusiasts, advocating for increased recognition of local talent.
The limited representation of local players in international competitions has been a recurring point of discussion within Nigeria’s football community.
The importance of nurturing and fostering talent at the grassroots level has been emphasized to create a more inclusive and competitive football landscape.
The previous AFCON edition in 2021, hosted by Cameroon, witnessed only one local player, John Noble, making it to the Super Eagles’ selection. As Nigeria prepares for the upcoming tournament, discussions surrounding the role of local talent in shaping the country’s football future continue to gain prominence.
The finalization of the Super Eagles squad for AFCON 2023 will undoubtedly draw attention, with stakeholders eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the 27 players who will represent Nigeria in one of Africa’s most prestigious football competitions.
