Ibrahima Konate: 95% of people around me only care because I’m a footballer

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has opened up about the darker side of fame, admitting that most people in his life are drawn to him because of his football career rather than genuine connection.

Born in France to Malian parents, Konate has grown into one of Europe’s most sought-after defenders since joining Liverpool from RB Leipzig.

With his contract set to expire in 2026, the 26-year-old is reportedly high on Real Madrid’s transfer list, as the Spanish giants look to strengthen their backline after signing Trent Alexander-Arnold from the Reds last summer.

At Madrid, Konate could earn a significantly higher salary and compete for more silverware, including the UEFA Champions League.

However, the centre-back admits that money and fame have brought unwanted attention and strained relationships.

“I’m not going to lie to you: I overdid it a bit, especially with clothes,” Konate said.

“You have no idea how much footballers need their families. Many people, more or less well-intentioned, roam around us. Ninety-five percent of them come because I’m Konate, the football player, not Ibrahima, the person.

“They want to take advantage of my fame, but they don’t really care about me. As soon as someone wants to approach me, they filter them out.”

Despite strong interest from Madrid, reports in England suggest that Konate will not be swayed by money alone.

The Spanish club, however, view him as the long-term successor to Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba, and could make a formal approach next summer if the defender refuses to extend his stay at Anfield.
