Ibrahim Sadiq seals MLS move as Colorado Rapids land Ghana winger

Ghanaian winger Ibrahim Sadiq has completed a move to Major League Soccer after the Colorado Rapids announced his signing on a contract running through the 2027-28 MLS season, with a club option for 2028-29.

The 26-year-old joins the Rapids from Dutch Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar, where he spent the last three seasons establishing himself as a dangerous attacking option in European football.

Sadiq will occupy an international roster slot and is expected to join his new teammates once he receives his P-1 Visa. The transfer was finalised before the close of the MLS Secondary Transfer Window.

Colorado believe the Ghanaian’s pace, attacking aggression and versatility from wide areas will provide a significant boost to their offensive options as they look to strengthen their squad.

“Ibrahim is an exciting attacking player who has demonstrated his quality across several competitive European leagues,” said Colorado Rapids President Pádraig Smith.

“His pace, directness, and ability to create and score goals from wide areas will add another important dimension to our attack. He also brings valuable experience of winning championships and competing in European competition. We are delighted to welcome Ibrahim to Colorado.”

Trophy-winning experience in Europe

Sadiq arrives in Colorado with considerable experience despite his relatively young age, having played in three European leagues during his professional career.

At AZ Alkmaar, he made 85 appearances across all competitions, scoring 18 goals and providing seven assists. His spell in the Netherlands was capped by success last season when he helped AZ win the 2025-26 KNVB Cup.

The winger also earned individual recognition during his time at the club, being named to the Eredivisie Team of the Month in September 2024.

Rapids head coach Matt Wells is particularly excited about the qualities Sadiq will bring to his system, having previously encountered the Ghanaian during European competition.

“Ibrahim gives us a different dimension in the attacking areas of the pitch,” said Wells.

“He is explosive, aggressive in one-v-one situations and constantly looks to threaten the space behind the opposition.”

Wells also highlighted Sadiq’s defensive work and pressing ability, qualities he believes will fit seamlessly into Colorado’s approach.

“The fans that watch us week in week out will know how important our pressing is and Ibrahim has the intensity and willingness to defend in that way.”

From Sweden to MLS

Before his move to AZ, Sadiq spent two seasons with Swedish club BK Häcken, where he produced an impressive 27 goals and eight assists in 43 appearances.

He played a key role in Häcken’s historic 2022 Allsvenskan triumph, helping the club secure the first league title in its history before moving to AZ in September 2023.

Sadiq’s European journey began at FC Nordsjælland after he developed at Ghana’s Right to Dream Academy. He progressed through the Danish club’s youth system before making 63 senior appearances, scoring six goals and registering three assists.

He also represented Ghana at youth international level, featuring at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup in India and later turning out for the country’s U-20 side.

Now, after gaining experience across Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands, Sadiq begins a new chapter in North America with the Colorado Rapids.
