Former England international Gabby Agbonlahor has advised Harvey Elliott to consider leaving Liverpool in search of regular first-team football.
The 22-year-old midfielder has been a standout performer at the ongoing UEFA U21 European Championship, scoring twice against the Netherlands to help England reach back-to-back finals.
Agbonlahor, who is of Nigerian descent, believes Elliott’s development could stall if he remains a fringe figure at Anfield.
Despite making 28 appearances last season, Elliott started only twice in the Premier League under former manager Jürgen Klopp—both coming after the title race had already been settled.
“He deserves to go and play and start week in, week out. He is 22 now,” Agbonlahor said after England’s semi-final win. “He needs to be getting 40 games a season and he isn’t getting that at Liverpool.”
The ex-Aston Villa striker suggested that a transfer—whether within England or abroad—could provide Elliott with the consistent minutes necessary for his growth.
“I would push for a move if I was him. I know it is hard to leave a big club like Liverpool, but for him and the club, a move is perfect.”
Agbonlahor also pointed out that Elliott’s market value has likely risen following his performances at the Euros and that a club competing for European football could offer the ideal next step.
Elliott himself has acknowledged his frustration with limited game time.
“It’s been hard with how much I’ve played,” he told Sky Sports in May. “It’s about what’s best for my career. It’s about reflecting and seeing what I can do.”
