New Everton signing Adam Aznou has expressed his unwavering commitment to Morocco, stating that he would have chosen the North African nation over Spain if he were in Lamine Yamal’s shoes.
The 19-year-old defender, who recently completed a move from Bayern Munich to the Premier League side, opened up about his international allegiance and his long-standing friendship with Barcelona’s teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal.
“I respect his decision, but if I were him, I would have chosen Morocco,” said Aznou, a former La Masia teammate of Yamal.
“When you reach the highest level—the senior national team—you have to follow your heart. It’s not about what’s convenient. You represent a country with passion, and you play to defend its honour.”
Aznou, who opted to represent Morocco despite also being eligible for Spain, explained that his choice was driven by genuine emotional connection rather than strategic career considerations.
“Morocco gives me everything,” he said. “I love this country deeply—its culture, its people, and everything it stands for. I asked myself what my heart truly wanted, and it was clear: Morocco. I didn’t hesitate for a second.”
Despite their differing paths, Aznou spoke highly of Yamal’s remarkable rise, describing the 17-year-old as “the best player in the world today.”
“I didn’t expect him to be this good this quickly, but I’m not surprised by his success. He’s simply incredible,” Aznou added.
The pair’s friendship and contrasting international choices underscore the complex decisions young dual-nationality players often face on the global stage.
