‘I was fulfilling my father’s dream’ - Lomana LuaLua reflects on representing DR Congo

Former striker Lomana LuaLua has revealed that representing the Democratic Republic of Congo was the ultimate fulfillment of a generational dream, describing the experience as “everything.”

Speaking in an interview with World Football Index (WFI), the former Portsmouth and Newcastle United star underscored the deep personal and national significance of his time with the Leopards.

The most poignant driver behind LuaLua’s international commitment was his father’s unfulfilled ambition.

LuaLua explained that his decision to play for DR Congo was a tribute to his family heritage. “My father was a footballer. His dream was to represent our country, but he never got that chance,” LuaLua said. “So, when I wore that shirt, I was fulfilling his dream too.”

Despite moving to England at a young age and developing his game in the British academy system, LuaLua maintained that his Congolese roots remained his primary identity.

He noted that the perspective he gained while traveling for international duty shifted his worldview, particularly when witnessing the resilience of the Congolese people amidst national hardship.

“Even though I grew up in England, Congo is in my blood,” he stated. “Seeing what football meant to the people, especially in a country that has suffered, changed me.”

Beyond personal sentiment, LuaLua highlighted the social responsibility that came with the captaincy. He viewed the national team’s success as a vital source of psychological relief for a population facing significant socio-political challenges.

According to the striker, victory on the pitch served as a brief but powerful respite for the fans. “When we won games, it gave people hope. In those moments, they could forget their problems,” he remarked.

Reflecting on a career that included four appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), LuaLua categorized his international tenure as the pinnacle of his professional life.

“To give that joy, to wear the flag, and to captain the team is a feeling I cannot fully explain,” he said. “It is one of the proudest parts of my career.”
