I want to become Manchester United head coach in the future - South Africa legend Benni McCarthy

Benni McCarthy has shared his long-term ambition of one day managing Manchester United, while also expressing a desire to take charge of Kaizer Chiefs in the future.

The South African football legend, who previously coached Cape Town City FC and AmaZulu FC, currently serves as head coach of the Kenya national football team after leaving his role as strikers coach of the Red Devils.

His side is scheduled to face Estonia national football team in the FIFA World Series during the upcoming international break.

Speaking during a question-and-answer session at the launch of his new book in Cape Town, McCarthy was asked which clubs he hopes to coach in the future.

The former striker made it clear that leading Manchester United remains a major personal goal.

“I was a first-team coach, I’m giving myself a little bit of time,” he replied.

“Maybe in five to 10 years, I want to be the head coach of Man United.

“And in South Africa, I’ve always been a Kaizer Chiefs supporter. I want to coach the two clubs that I grew up supporting.

“So Man United and Kaizer Chiefs,” he added.

McCarthy ended his playing career at Orlando Pirates and has frequently been linked with coaching roles at South Africa’s traditional powerhouses — Chiefs, Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns — whenever vacancies arise.

He began his coaching career with Cape Town City in 2017 and guided the club to victory in the MTN8 during his tenure.

McCarthy later took charge of AmaZulu, where he steered the club away from relegation and secured qualification for the CAF Champions League.

His achievements earned him the PSL Coach of the Season honour for the 2020/21 campaign.
