Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté has expressed his joy and deep emotion following the club’s record-equalling 20th Premier League title win.
The title was wrapped up after the Reds secured with a 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday at Anfield.
With the win, Liverpool clinched the title with four matches still to play. Konaté, who has Malian heritage, admitted that the achievement left him feeling overwhelmed with emotion.
“After the game, I walked into the stadium and just sat in the stand to feel like a fan and I don’t have words to describe what I felt,” Konaté said.
“I said to my brother, ‘I want to see how it is to sit in the stand if I watch a game.’ I tried to act like a fan, but the stadium was empty, and I just wanted to enjoy the moment on my own.”
The Frenchman revealed that the weight of the victory nearly brought him to tears.
“I was close to crying. It’s crazy, unbelievable, and we have to really enjoy it now. Everyone in the dressing room was very happy, but everyone was tired as well,” Konaté added.
The Reds will officially lift the Premier League trophy at Anfield on May 25th in their final game of the season against FA Cup finalists Crystal Palace.
Reflecting on the significance of the title, Konaté said, “To be fair, I don’t realise yet, but we have to enjoy it. The last day of the season will be more special when we lift the trophy. It’s amazing after four seasons, and I’m very happy.”
Konaté, who watched the Premier League growing up, also took pride in becoming the first French player from Liverpool to win the title.
“Since I was young, I watched this league every week, and now to win it is crazy,” he said.
