I hope to see Senegal play in the final of 2026 World Cup – CAF president Motsepe
Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has expressed confidence that Senegal could reach the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, even suggesting that two African nations could feature in the title match.
Motsepe made the remarks on Wednesday during an official visit to Dakar, where he met with state and football officials in the aftermath of the controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in Morocco.
The visit followed a dispute over the outcome of the tournament’s final, where Senegal initially secured a 1-0 victory before the CAF Appeal Board ruled in favour of Morocco after a protest by the North African side.
Senegal has since escalated the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Speaking to journalists, Motsepe struck an optimistic tone about Africa’s prospects on the global stage.
“I think I’m going to see Senegal in the World Cup final in America! And maybe even two African nations in the final,” he said.
He extended the same message to all African teams heading to the World Cup, urging them to aim high and bring pride to the continent.
“This is the same message I give to all 10 African nations going to the World Cup. Inshallah, can I see you in the final? That would make Africa proud,” Motsepe added.
Motsepe is expected to continue his tour with a visit to Morocco on Thursday for talks with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation.
