Morocco coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, has expressed his disappointment after his side lost the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The North African side suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat against South Africa on Sunday.
Speaking after the game, Ouahbi stressed that the loss was undeserved, pointing to the superiority of the “Atlas Cubs” in performance, opportunities, and control of the match.
“I cannot understand how the title slipped from us. We were the better team against South Africa, and the numbers confirm that in terms of possession, attacks, opportunities, and even corner kicks. We controlled the match, but the result did not reflect our efforts. We do not belittle our opponent’s efforts, but we deserved a better result,” he said.
“I can’t blame any player for the mistake that led to the goal; this is part of football. We have to get up quickly now; the World Cup in Chile awaits us, and we will work hard to live up to the expectations of the Moroccan fans,” he added.
The loss halted Morocco’s dream of achieving a historic feat of collecting the African Nations Cup titles for different age groups in one year, after the U-17 team won last month and the U-23 team won last year.
